The Ahead Academy team is still beaming over the success of our inaugural Braid Camp! We hosted 14 girls for a powerful session on the importance of self-empowerment, creativity, and, ultimately, braiding! It was a day that we won't soon forget.
WGN Feature: A Glimpse into Success
The recent feature on WGN News titled "Braids and Brilliance: Black Girls Learn Empowerment and Entrepreneurship" provides a captivating insight into our origins, philosophy, and goals, as well as the incredible impact of this workshop!
The feature highlights how Ahead Academy's workshops serve. as a safe space where young Black girls can explore their potential while embracing their cultural heritage. The 'Braids & Brilliance' curriculum instills a sense of pride and self-confidence by emphasizing the beauty and versatility of natural hair. You can read the full article by Gaynor Hall here.
Empowering Through Education and Creativity
Braid workshops at Ahead Academy go beyond traditional classroom learning by nurturing the 'whole' student. Our campers began the session with a mindfulness activity, followed by a discussion centered around beauty, how they define it, and assuring girls that the definition is more flexible than society leads us to believe.
We closed out the session with the 'braids' portion of the workshop! Each girl got to showcase her strengths and learn to embrace her true potential. Each participant expanded their skillset and took learning into their own hands! Some girls even felt empowered to the point of braiding in extensions (which was NOT in the curriculum plan for the day!) and experimenting with different braids. We were happy to meet each participant where they were and to give them the space to explore, fail, and repeat until success!
Safe and Inclusive Space:
We understand the importance of providing a safe and inclusive space for black and brown girls to express themselves freely. Our braid workshops are designed to foster a supportive and welcoming environment where girls can connect with like-minded peers, build lasting friendships, and celebrate their unique beauty. We prioritize creating a space that values diversity, encourages collaboration, and promotes respect for one another.
Registration for Ahead Academy's workshops for October are now open, and spaces are limited. Don't miss this chance to be part of a community that uplifts and celebrates Black and Brown girls. Let's empower the next generation of leaders, one braid at a time.
